NEW COURSE: Alberta Grasslands Stories

In conjunction with CPAWS, Dr. Sabrina Perić will be offering a new field-based course from July 7 - 11, 2025: ANTH 541 - Alberta Grasslands Stories.

This 5-day field course explores climate change on Alberta grasslands through multiple knowledge systems. Students will visit Foothills County, MD Pincher Creek, and the Kainai Reserve to learn from conservation organizations, Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, scientists, and ranchers about the critical role that grasslands play in climate solutions, as well as their natural and sociocultural systems.

Southern Alberta’s grasslands are a crucial yet often undervalued ecosystem. Despite their vital role in carbon sequestration, potentially surpassing that of forests, these grasslands face numerous threats including urban and agricultural expansion, resource development, and recreational use.

Students will be able to document their experiences and create digital stories about the grasslands using Energy Stories Lab Equipment!!!

Because this course has been generously funded by the Mobilizing Alberta Climate Action Grant, students are only responsible for tuition fees.

Email energystorieslab@ucalgary.ca for more information.

Energy Stories Lab

The Energy Stories Lab is collaborative and transdisciplinary, combining ethnography with new forms of art and visualization, including augmented reality (AR), 3D object making, collective mapping and GIS. We highly value collaborative community-based digital storytelling methods, such as PhotoVoice, VideoVoice and also novel approaches to oral and life history.
