WE’RE HIRING: Undergrad RA Position

The Energy Stories Lab at the University of Calgary (www.energystorieslab.ca) and the Foothills County Historical Committee are looking to hire one undergraduate research assistant (RA) to conduct research for the “Boom, Bust, Repeat: Energy Pasts, Presents, and Futures in Foothills County” project.

This position is expected to run from May 1 until August 30, 2025. Hourly wage for the RA is $20/hour for a maximum of 250 hours of work (approximately $5000 total). Hours are flexible, and the schedule will be established with the hired RA. Students are able to work part-time. The location of the RA-ship is primarily Calgary, with some field work in Foothills County.

Duties and responsibilities may include:

1)      Collecting, sourcing, and organizing archival materials from the University of Calgary’s Glenbow Western Research Centre on the topic of energy in Foothills County;

2)      Digitizing archival materials where appropriate;

3)      Participating in interviews in Foothills County;

4)      Transcribing and coding interviews;

5)      Liaising with community partners in Foothills County.

Possible additional opportunities could include learning to: pilot drones, participate in the creation of 3D models of energy heritage sites, and expanding on oral history skills and experience.

Position candidates must be:

·       Full-time enrolled undergraduate students in any related discipline;

Priority will go to undergraduate students who

·       are resident in Foothills County;

·       are enrolled in a program at the University of Calgary;

·       have had some experience with historical research.

Energy Stories Lab

The Energy Stories Lab is collaborative and transdisciplinary, combining ethnography with new forms of art and visualization, including augmented reality (AR), 3D object making, collective mapping and GIS. We highly value collaborative community-based digital storytelling methods, such as PhotoVoice, VideoVoice and also novel approaches to oral and life history.
